Six harbour seals, two males and four females, arrived from Zoo Neuwied today. After renovation of the seal enclosure in Neuwied, five of the seals are supposed to return. One young male will stay at Wildlands.

In Wildlands, the seals will soon move into a new enclosure. The former Nortica Theatre will be converted into a seal enclosure named 'Dock 16'. The main route is going to be passing through the theatre and the enclosure will have a Scandinavian harbour theme.

In a podcast about Wildlands made by a regional broadcaster, the Wildlands spokesperson told that the last Siberian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris exalbidus) will soon leave the zoo. After this, the squirrel enclosure will be renovated and enlarged. It will then house a new species, the Swinhoe's striped squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei).

Visited Wildlands yesterday and as expected, very little has changed.

A small portion of the wooden deck over the sealion exhibit has been removed to allow better viewing of the Californians. Both doors of the old sealion theatre are now permanently open and it’s “rebranded” as a seal exhibit. Which makes it look odd, as it’s clearly a theatre fallen in disuse.

The siberian squirrel was still “on exhibit” (as in signed but not seen).

I also missed asian elephant Timber, but I think he was in the only behind the scenes exhibit.

My kids still adore the place, mainly for it’s playgrounds and although I always enjoy myself, the ghost of what could have been still haunts me :(
